Stalingrad - 1942:
Two titanic armies clash on the banks of the Volga. The soldiers talk of
home, but know there is no retreat. In the midst of the carnage the
grotesque figure of death plays a haunting melody to the frost bitten
soldiers...This is a cold war. The play is set in the smouldering ruins of
Stalin’s Showpiece city against the backdrop of the most bloody battle of
the Second World War – a battle that decided not on the fate of the entire
war, but ultimately the shape of the rest of the Century. It begins in
September 1942, and tell the story of six soldiers struggling to survive
the carnage – three Russian and three German. We follow their fate through
their stories, jokes, confessions and regrets and discover just how much
they are willing to sacrifice their lives for the cause |

York Settlement Players
present "The Good Person of Szechwan" - by Bertolt Brecht.
How can you be good when everybody is trying to rip you off? How can you
protect yourself against those you love as well as those you fear? Are
people vicious by nature or is society to blame? In Brecht’s fable, The
Good Person of Szechwan, the answers are sometimes stark, sometimes
funny, sometimes surprising, but always sharply observed. York Settlement
Players’ production sets the play in an inner-city blighted by poverty and
drugs, but tries to bring out the comedy and the irony in the script as
well. A must-see for students of Drama and Theatre, this is also a play
that has important things to say to anyone interested in the confusing
world we live in |

present "Headstrong" - by April de Angelis
Two young women, thrown together on a ship around the world - one a
spoiled heiress, the other her servant - but both equally headstrong. With
months at sea ahead of them, Lila Mae encounters a doctor who makes a
surprising diagnosis, and prescribes an even more surprising cure. Soon
it’s hard to tell who’s in control and who’s being controlled. When Rose
decides that her mistress’s medicine is worse than her illness, she knows
she needs a truly incendiary plan to get them both free... |

'The Passion' -
Riding Lights Theatre Company is invited each year to perform a Passion
Play as the centrepiece of the Good Friday service in the nave of York
Minster. This occasion, at the heart of our preparation for Easter, has
provided a moving combination of powerful theatre, meditation, prayer and
corporate worship.
This year the Company is touring this unique presentation to other
churches throughout Lent.
The major part of the evening is a beautifully staged ensemble performance
of the events leading up to the death and burial of Christ. The Passion is
divided into six episodes to create space for other expressions of worship
and reflection arising directly out of the drama. These additional
elements have been created in collaboration with The Reverend Jeremy
Fletcher, Canon Precentor of York Minster, and will be read by readers and
musicians from each community hosting the performance.
The whole presentation becomes a powerful act of remembrance which is both
participatory and reflective - a doorway into a deeper experience of the
nature of Christ’s passion |

'Antipope' by Robert
Rankin - The Antipope is Rankin's first novel, and is the first in
the (now legendary) Brentford Trilogy. It tells the story of Jim Pooley
and John O'Malley - two lazy ne'er-do-wells, who constantly find
themselves to be the only thing that stands in the way of the total
annihilation of the planet (or sometimes just its absolute domination),
when they'd much rather be supping a pint of large down 'The Flying Swan',
or playing a game of allotment golf. When a beggar of dreadful aspect and
sorry footwear makes its way to our heroes' drinking establishment of
choice, so begins a tale of terror, cunning, and Pope Alexander VI - last

York Early Music
Festival - The 2004 Festival, will take its inspiration from the 300th
anniversary of the deaths of two great composers of the late 17th century
- Charpentier and Biber - who both died in 1704. The French composer
Charpentier will be the starting point for music from Paris in particular
and France in general - across the ages, both before and after
Charpentier. Thus as well as celebrating the exuberant music-making at the
court of Louis XIV, the Festival will explore the richness of the French
tradition from medieval times onwards. The focus will be especially on
choral and small-scale church music (e.g. motets), to suit the intimate
surroundings of York’s venues.
Taking its inspiration from Biber, the Festival will also focus on string
music in the Austro-German tradition, for both solo and ensemble. A
highlight will be Biber’s own Mystery Sonatas, which require the violin to
be tuned unconventionally to produce some amazingly modern-sounding
harmonies. Other composers to be featured will include Buxtehude,
Schmelzer, Walther and Muffat. As well as the usual mix of lunchtime,
evening and late-night concerts, the Festival will include talks and
workshops that reflect the choice of theme.
Guest artists already confirmed include Ensemble 415 directed by Chiara
Banchini; the Binchois Consort directed by Andrew Kirkman; the Gabrieli
Consort and Players directed by Paul McCreesh and Sonnerie |

Biber's sublime polychoral requiem in F minor forms the centrepiece of

German music on the theme of death and consolation. Taking inspiration

Requiem with music by Schutz, Tunder and Weckmann in celebration of the
300th anniversary of the death of Biber |

Sutapa Biswas -
Contemporary Art Exhibition in the Terrace Gallery. Sutapa Biswas is one
of the UK's leading artists who over the last seventeen years has created
an intensely evocative and challenging body of work engaging with
feminism, cultural identity and memory.
Magnesium Bird will begin as a public performance in Harewood's 18th
century walled garden when one hundred small birds sculpted from
magnesium, connected to each other over a thirty square metre space, will
be ignited at dusk. As an ephemeral piece of work, it will be intensely
charged with themes of loss, love and trepidation. Documentary film and
photographs of the event will be shown alongside a selection of bird
drawings by J.M.W. Turner. As in the 2002 showing of Mark Wallinger's work
alongside George Stubbs, Harewood again provides a rare opportunity to
view traditional, historic artistic masterpieces alongside challenging new
work - this time by a leading contemporary black British artist |
