8th April 'The Passion' - Riding Lights Theatre Company is invited each year to perform a Passion Play as the centrepiece of the Good Friday service in the nave of York Minster. This occasion, at the heart of our preparation for Easter, has provided a moving combination of powerful theatre, meditation, prayer and corporate worship.
This year the Company is touring this unique presentation to other churches throughout Lent.
The major part of the evening is a beautifully staged ensemble performance of the events leading up to the death and burial of Christ. The Passion is divided into six episodes to create space for other expressions of worship and reflection arising directly out of the drama. These additional elements have been created in collaboration with The Reverend Jeremy Fletcher, Canon Precentor of York Minster, and will be read by readers and musicians from each community hosting the performance.

2-10th July York Early Music Festival - The 2004 Festival, will take its inspiration from the 300th anniversary of the deaths of two great composers of the late 17th century - Charpentier and Biber - who both died in 1704. The French composer Charpentier will be the starting point for music from Paris in particular and France in general - across the ages, both before and after Charpentier. Thus as well as celebrating the exuberant music-making at the court of Louis XIV, the Festival will explore the richness of the French tradition from medieval times onwards. The focus will be especially on choral and small-scale church music (e.g. motets), to suit the intimate surroundings of York’s venues.

Taking its inspiration from Biber, the Festival will also focus on string music in the Austro-German tradition, for both solo and ensemble. A highlight will be Biber’s own Mystery Sonatas, which require the violin to be tuned unconventionally to produce some amazingly modern-sounding harmonies. Other composers to be featured will include Buxtehude, Schmelzer, Walther and Muffat. As well as the usual mix of lunchtime, evening and late-night concerts, the Festival will include talks and workshops that reflect the choice of theme.

Guest artists already confirmed include Ensemble 415 directed by Chiara Banchini; the Binchois Consort directed by Andrew Kirkman; the Gabrieli Consort and Players directed by Paul McCreesh and Sonnerie

As an ephemeral piece of work, it will be intensely charged with themes of loss, love and trepidation. Documentary film and photographs of the event will be shown alongside a selection of bird drawings by J.M.W. Turner. As in the 2002 showing of Mark Wallinger's work alongside George Stubbs, Harewood again provides a rare opportunity to view traditional, historic artistic masterpieces alongside challenging new work - this time by a leading contemporary black British artist
